Tl dr: Just play Reni-6 (or Frank Dawson) instead. The Science game is just forecasting prices for the next day, and choosing the building with the highest $ number. In contrast, Reni-6 after Round 2 is a constant barrage of messing with your opponent, deciding which resource prices to mess with, what monopolies to establish, what buildings to shut down, and whether to shut down those buildings with BM or with price manipulation. All the Science campaign games feel roughly identical. Then comes the Glass, Chems, and Patent Office. Nothing really changes from round to round - you build the same Steel, Aluminum Mine, Farms, Reactors every time, occasionally switching the order.

My income is sufficient to support permanent 100k engineers in early rounds, and permanent 200k upgrades in later rounds, but I simply don't see how to reach for the 5-8m perm Free Offworld with Ilana, unless you do decide to buy that Quarry Engineer and start rolling in Laboratories. That means you'll be making minimal money, round after round.

Because Science can't get an early lead, it can't buy early modules, and early modules are the driver of high prices. Because of the unfavorable distribution of modules, Science can't easily buy modules. Overall, Ilana Kamat is way harder than Reni-6. It would be nice if the Free Patent Office was moved to the second Patent Office Engineer, since it is a bit frustrating to have a useless engineer. You get a Patent Office unlock, but if you buy a Free Patent Office, the Patent Office unlock will be dead weight. I think this strategy doesn't deserve to exist, but at the moment, you might as well abuse it. Force the AI to get water as well, since you can't get water, and you don't want the AI to start selling water when water is at $50. Force the AI to get silicon, because your Solar Panels and Glass Furnaces both require silicon to build.

The most critical part of the strategy is that you must force the AI to do two things at level 1. The US/EU colony types are still preferred. Thus, you'll usually be founding last, so you get to scan most of the iron on the map, which means China's colony bonus is not that helpful. (Hopefully, balance will eventually shift so that this Laboratory problem doesn't occur.)Ĭhina is the only colony type without Laboratory (carbon) modules, but as Science, you don't have much competition for your favored founding locations. Buying a Quarry engineer and pretending to be Reni-6 defeats the whole purpose of having different managers, so for the rest of the post, I'm going to pretend that Quarry Engineers don't exist. However, it seems Ilana Kamat is intended not to have Quarries. Now, it's true that you'll do better if you purchase a Carbon Quarry Engineer, since the Laboratory module is simply so powerful. Science has significant problems finding a niche in the module system. The only good module type is the Laboratory, which you can't buy. Power (Office) is no good because the AI loves building early power. Many of the other modules also consume electronics, which you have difficulty making. However, note that Leisure modules (bought with chems) consume water, and you have no Water Pumps. This helps to drive up the Chem price, and you happen to be good at making chems. Or, you can buy only Habitats, and let the AI opponents fill in the Laboratories. Instead of hiring a level 1 Quarry engineer for carbon, you instead use chems and glass to buy modules. It's possible to play Ilana Kamat without cheap modules, although performance is not great. But you have one Mine engineer and no Quarry engineers, so you don't have access to the cheap modules. At 100 Al/C, their material costs are half as much as the other module types. The reason is that Habitats and Laboratories, which use aluminum and carbon, are cheap. Science's big theme is building advanced buildings only and skipping the basic production, but this was nerfed in Beta 7.
